Charles F. Jung Collection

In 1996, Mr. James A. Riley of Hattiesburg donated to the department of Manuscripts and Archives in the McCain Library and Archives of the USM University Libraries an interesting collection of business correspondence, bills of lading, and other materials related to the livery stable and carriage rental business of Charles F. Jung of New Orleans during the early years of the 20th century.

The Jung business was located at 2916 Magazine Street and provided carriages for Bultmann Funeral Home, among other customers.

Mr. Jung's trade was solicited by firms such as the New England Whip Company, described on their business letterhead as "Manufacturers of Whips & Lashes of Every Description," and the Pfister & Vogel Leather Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which sent him a sample of their leather, still preserved in the envelope.

Included in the collection is a card from the Standard Rivet Company of Boston, to which are attached three brass half-spheres, each about one-half inch wide. These "Sunburst Spots," or decorative brads for horse bridles, are described in the timeless language of advertising as making "a brilliant effect, especially noticeable when the horses are in motion; then the appearance is that of a lot of diamonds scintillating in the sunlight."
