Biographical / Historical

During World War I, Mary B. Kimball worked as a hospital librarian at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Her letter provides insight into daily life at Camp Shelby, camp moral and the weather. Camp Shelby was opened as a base for training National Guard soldiers going to serve in World War I in 1917. Some of the divisions that were trained at Camp Shelby for the war include, the 38th, 3rd,4th, 9th,17th,39th,42nd and 92nd Divisions. Kimball’s letter also includes interactions with soldiers based at Camp Shelby.
