Biographical / Historical
Richard Aubrey McLemore was born in Perry County on June 6, 1903. He graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1919. McLemore earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Mississippi College, his Master’s Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt University, and his Doctorate from Vanderbilt University. He came to Mississippi Southern College in 1938 as a history professor. He was appointed Dean of the college in 1945 and became Acting President of M.S.C. in 1955. McLemore was President of Mississippi College from 1957 to 1968. He was director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from 1969 to 1973. He was the author of numerous history books and articles. Richard McLemore died on August 31, 1976. He is interred in Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg.
