Biographical / Historical

Reba Pickering Rogers was born in 1917 and a native of Covington County, Mississippi, lived with her family on a roughly three-hundred-acre farm west of Okatoma. Mrs. Rogers wrote this memoir at the request of her grandchildren, and it includes her experiences growing up on the farm. She also includes some history on the Ernest and Pearl Knight family, while also discussing an outhouse built on the Pickering farm with the help of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Works Progress Administration (1935) was a part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal program. The WPA was a work-relief program that employed millions of Americans during the Great Depression and was used to help build public projects such as parks, roads, and schools. The Pickering family benefited from this program with the building of an outhouse on the family’s farm.
