Biographical / Historical
The B’Nai Israel congregation in Hattiesburg, Mississippi started in 1890 when Maurice Dreyfus began religious services in his home. The B’Nai Israel residence moved to the Odd Fellows Building in 1900 and remained there until 1920. The congregation received its first permanent home in 1920 when it purchased an old army barracks building at Camp Shelby and used the dismantled lumber to construct a new at the corner of Hardy Street and Pine Street (the present site of BancorpSouth). The congregation’s current synagogue was constructed at the intersection of South 12th Avenue and Mamie Street in 1946.
