Biographical / Historical
Ronald Clifford "Ronnie" Shows served as United States Congressman from Mississippi's Fourth Congressional District from 1998-2002. Due to a decline in population reflected in the 2000 census, Mississippi's Congressional seats were reduced from five to four, and the resultant redistricting plan pitted Mr. Shows against Third District Congressman Chip Pickering, who ultimately won the 2002 general election.
Shows was born January 26, 1947, in Jones County, Mississippi, the son of Clifford and Janelle Shows. He graduated from Moselle High School, attended Jones and Southeastern Baptist Junior Colleges, and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971. After college, he taught and coached basketball at Prentiss Junior High School, Lawrence Academy, Columbia Academy and Bassfield Elementary School. He and his wife, the former Johnnie Ruth McNease, were married December 17, 1968. They have four children and four grandchildren.
In 1976, Mr. Shows was elected Circuit Clerk of Jefferson Davis County, and after serving one term, he ran for and was elected to the Mississippi Senate in 1980, where he served on the Appropriations, Rules, and Oil & Gas Committees. He completed two full terms in the Senate and was elected for a third, but in a 1988 special election, he was elected to complete a term as Southern District Transportation Commissioner. He served in that capacity until his election to the United States Congress in 1998. As a Congressman, he served on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the Committee on Financial Services, the Committee on Agriculture, and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
In March 2003, Shows accepted a position as lobbyist for the Global Peace Initiative, a Christian evangelical organization. He also announced plans to work with the Jefferson Group, a Washington D. C. lobbying firm.

Arrangement
The collection is divided into four series, and wherever possible, Congressman Shows' folder titles and system of arrangement have been retained.
Series I: Appropriations Files, contains requests, allotments, correspondence and other materials pertaining to appropriations for fiscal years 2000-2003. In many instances, files in this series reflect the title of the committee or subcommittee under whose auspices the appropriations requests fall (Transportation, or Agriculture, for example).
Series II: Redistricting Files, consists of materials relating to the reapportionment of Mississippi prior to the 2002 general election. Included are census data, election results, voter statistics, and various plans and proposals regarding how redistricting should be accomplished.
Series III: Created Subject Files, is made up of unfoldered materials that were collected and arranged alphabetically, in order to make them more accessible to researchers. Among the materials in this series are newsletters, legislative profiles, Congressman Shows' voting record, and information regarding franking privileges. The series also contains a significant number of newspaper clippings on the topic of redistricting.
Series IV: Files Printed from Disks, contains files concerning appropriations, legislation, military retirees, speeches, newsletters, news releases, and a host of other subjects. In addition, there are a large number of form letters drafted by Mr. Shows and/or his staff.
