Also photographed in this collection are patients who she took care of during her service, and buildings within Camp Shelby.

Biographical / Historical

Catherine Adeline Crowell was born in Ashboro, North Carolina on November 3, 1919. Her parents were George Benjamin and Ruth Adeline Crowell. She was the oldest of their ten children She attended Asheboro High School until she graduated in 1937. She then began working at the Bossong Hosiery Mill in Asheboro. Later, she attended St. Leo’s Hospital to study nursing. Many women who trained there were training to become nurses during World War II. She graduated in 1944 with honors. After graduating, Crowell started basic training at Camp Rucker in Daleville, Alabama for the Army Nurse Corps. She completed her training at Camp Rucker and began her active service on April 29, 1945 as a general duty nurse under the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. She was then assigned to the Regional Hospital at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. There she worked in Ward #27 where she watched over civilian employees, soldiers, and P.O.W.s who were in surgical recovery. Crowell was then transferred to the Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. She remained there until her discharged on December 21, 2946.

She later received her license as a registered nurse in Alabama on November 12, 1947. She traveled back to North Carolina to serve at the Polio Hospital in Hickory, North Carolina. On May 20, 1950, Crowell married Clyde Dwain Hester in Greene County, Arkansas. There she lived in Jonesboro, Arkansas and worked as a nurse until her retirement. She was a charter member of the Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. [See: External Documents below]

On March 18, 2014, Catherine Adeline Crowell Hester passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
