Scope and Contents

The first record book includes details on the first conference held by Bunker Hill Baptist Church and indicates Rules of Decorum as well as Articles of Faith. Some Articles include the belief “of Jesus Christ, And …that the true mode of baptism is by immersion,” the belief in “the resurrection of the dead. And a general judgement,” and the belief that “the punishment of the wicked will be everlasting And the joyes [sic] of the righteous will be eternal.” A list of charter members follows with the church’s roster of membership through 1959. The church minute books also contain obituaries and information on church rolls, deacons, and Sunday School teachers.

Biographical / Historical

Bunker Hill Baptist Church was established in 1882 under the leadership of Rev. T. S. Powell, who was later involved in the founding of the First Baptist Church of Columbia. As of 2020, the pastor is Randy Gardner.

This collection consists of four church minute books for Bunker Hill Baptist Church in Columbia, Mississippi that date from 1882-1959. The books detail the church’s foundation, articles of faith, membership, and attendance at conferences. The collection would be of particular interest to researchers studying the Baptist Church in Mississippi and genealogy of Marion County families.

Arrangement

The minute books are arranged chronologically, and the first book, which dates from circa 1882-1916, has been copied on acid-free paper because of its fragile state. The copies are at the front of the collection.
