Biographical / Historical

Ruleville, Mississippi was established as a settlement in Sunflower County, Mississippi, by J. W. Rule in 1898. Originally a railroad town dependent on the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, the area was developed for cotton plantations in the nineteenth century and was a pivotal location in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Notable individuals from Ruleville include Fannie Lou Hamer, co-founder of the Freedom Democratic Party of Mississippi (FDMP).

This collection consists of books written by Ruleville, Mississippi residents John Allen Robertson, Tom Conger, Jr., and Rev. Allen Dearing on the town’s history and the development of the white Baptist and Methodist churches in the area. The collection is of interest to researchers studying Mississippi religious history and the Mississippi Delta.
