Scope and Contents
The Susan Patterson Papers contain newspapers, letters, and other materials from the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project. In addition, it contains legal correspondence regarding her 1964 arrest. There are also assignments from some of her Freedom School students.

Biographical / Historical
Susan Patterson was a civil rights’ activist from New York City during the early 1960s. She was in Washington, D.C. during Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1963 march on Washington. In 1964, she went to Hattiesburg, MS to help with the Freedom School project. While in Hattiesburg, she was arrested and labeled an invader. After several trial postponements, Patterson was eventually released in 1965. The incident left Patterson with severe PTSD. In 2004, she declined an invitation to speak at a 40-year Freedom Summer reunion in Ohio.
