"Political Correspondences" (Lowndes County, Miss.) Broadside
Scope and Contents
This document is a broadside printed in Lowndes County, Mississippi in December, 1860. It was written by several citizens who opposed secession from the Union. The first section contains one group's wishes to secure their rights under constitutional means within the Union. They recommend that representatives be selected to attend the state convention which will consider what action is appropriate. The next section is the acceptance by two candidates, M. M. Rowan and E. B. Gaston, saying that they do believe in that approach, but if constitutional means are exhausted, they are in favor of securing their rights outside of the Union. The last section is the proceedings of a meeting of the citizens of District No. 1, Lowndes County, Mississippi held at Caladonia on Wednesday, December 5, 1860. It states their opposition to secession because they feel that the problems can be solved within the Union and urges the state to propose a resolution to the slave states to try to solve the problems within the union before resorting to other means.
The names of various citizens in attendance at the meetings are cited as is that of Ruffin Webb who wanted to go on record as being opposed to the resolutions of the meeting.
