Scope and Contents

A letter dated October 15, 1862, from Andrew J. Patrick near Holly Springs, Mississippi, to his father and his wife. To his father he writes about the October 3-4, conflict with Union troops at Corinth, Mississippi, and the death or capture of several members of his regiment, including his friend, David Haigler, from whom he had not heard since leaving Corinth. In this letter Patrick reveals his concern for his family's well-being in his absence or in the case of his death. To his wife, Patrick writes about his health, provisions, of clothing for the family, and the possibility of their not meeting again.

Biographical / Historical

Andrew J. Patrick, born ca. 1828 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was a farmer from Ellisville, Mississippi, where he lived with his wife and five children in 1860. In April 1862, he enlisted in Company K, 37th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate Army. Also known as the Jasper Guards, Co. K was organized March 30, 1862 in Jasper County. Patrick died or was killed in battle in December 1864. During his enlistment with the 37th Mississippi Infantry, he engaged in battle with Union troops October 3-4, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi, where the Federals drove the Confederate forces out of Corinth, and pushed them west to Holly Springs. Patrick's friend, David Haigler, who is mentioned in the letter, was taken prisoner by the Federals at that engagement, but was back with his company in the fall of 1864. Haigler, also an Orangeburg, S.C. native, was a mechanic from Jones County where he resided with his wife and children in 1860.
