Scope and Contents

The Southern Tourism Collection includes advertisements for tourist destinations throughout the United States, with the vast majority located in the American South. This collection is organized geographically, and each geographic level (i.e. country, state, Mississippi region, county, and city) is organized alphabetically.

These materials cover approximately ten different states, with most state-level material concentrated in Mississippi. Additionally, it encompasses eleven different regions within Mississippi, with particular emphasis on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. At the county-level, this collection includes materials from twenty-two of Mississippi’s eighty-two counties.

Biographical / Historical

The Southern Tourism Collection includes pamphlets, brochures, maps, booklets, and fliers for destinations and events primarily in the American South. With bright colors and catchy copy, these materials advertise pilgrimages, museums, festivals, fishing trips, parks, casinos, hotels, restaurants, and more.

Series I: Country, Region, State, Mississippi Region, County, City

The bulk of this collection is comprised of attractions and events advertised for specific cities. Approximately ninety different cities are represented in this collection, almost entirely from Mississippi. The Mississippi cities of Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Natchez, and Vicksburg are particularly strongly represented in this collection.

Series II: Stereographic Images and Glass Slide

In its second series, this collection contains five stereographic images and one glass slide.

Series III: Oversized Materials

The third series contains oversized materials.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Most of the materials were purchased with the Douglas A Noverr Grant for Collection Enhancement for Institutions to Build Popular Culture and American Culture Research Collections (Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association).

Accessions were given by Diane Ross, Kaylene Behm (via Danielle Bishop), and Jeremy Robbins and Kay Allen of the Lawrence County Historical Society.

Accessions were also transferred from the S. G. Thigpen Papers (M446) and the Postcard Collection (M36).
