United States....Land Patent-Mississippi, 1841
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of one United States Land Patent dated February 27, 1841. It provides clear title to 483 acres of land in Scott County, Mississippi, to Sylvester Pearl of Lowndes County, Mississippi. The land sale was handled through the land office in Columbus, Mississippi.
The patent contains a signature of President Martin Van Buren by his secretary and of J. Williamson, Recorder of the General Land Office. A note on the document states July 13, 1861, as the date of the Recorder's signing. It was common for this kind of time to lapse between the final payment for land and the issuing of the patent.

Biographical / Historical
Sale of public lands in Mississippi and Alabama was handled through a United States Land Office established in a fort or local population center. Land was first offered at public auction; then any land remaining unsold was available for "private sale" or "private entry." A partial payment was made for a tract of land, and when final payment was received and the final certificate issued, a patent was recorded and sent to the land office to be given to the owner. Frequently, a settler making payments would assign (sell) his title to another individual, noted on government documents as the "assignee."
Lowndes County, Mississippi, was formed in 1830 from lands of the Choctaw Cession of 1816 and of 1830. It is located in the northeastern part of the state and was named for Congressman William Lowndes of South Carolina.
Scott County, Mississippi, was formed in 1833 from lands of the Choctaw Cession of 1830. It is located in the east central portion of the state.
No biographical information is available on Sylvester Pearl.
