Madge Burney Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the personal papers of Madge Burney, as well as material she collected from the United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.), Children of the Confederacy (C. of C.), Wayne County Red Cross, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and the Women's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.).
The personal correspondence, covering the period 1926 and 1953 with the bulk of the material from 1948 to 1953, concerns Burney's membership in the U.D.C. and C. of C.; ledger books for the U.D.C. and C. of C.; Red Cross correspondence, a minute book, and pamphlets covering the years 1940 and 1944; DAR Yearbooks, 1936 to 1953; a W.C.T.U. Record Book, 1913 to 1914; and photographs.

Biographical / Historical
Madge Burney was born in August 1886, to J.C. and Ophelia Durrett in Aberdeen, Mississippi. She married John Tackett Burney in 1905. They made their home in Waynesboro, Wayne County, Mississippi. Mrs. Burney was active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, serving as Third Vice President General between 1927 and 1929. She was also a state organizer of the Children of the Confederacy. Between 1928 and 1932 and 1936 and 1940 she served as a member of the Board of the Jefferson Davis Soldiers Home at Beauvoir. Mrs. Burney was a member of the Pushmataha Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at Meridian, Mississippi. During World War II, she was also active in the Wayne County Red Cross Chapter. Mrs. Burney died on April 22, 1953, and is buried at Waynesboro.
