Gore Civil War History Collection

This collection consists of an unsigned, undated 87 page history of Company D of the 15th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army, and the second page of a letter from the 1890's, listing the company commanders of the 15th Mississippi Infantry. The history is written in two distinct handwritings, neither of which seems to match the handwriting of Thomas Gore in the letter from the 1890's.

The history describes the organization and activities of Company D, the 15th Mississippi Infantry, from 1861 through their part in the Georgia Campaign in 1864. A narrator, who refers to himself as "the writer," presumably Gore, elaborates on the events and battles in which the 15th participated: the passage through the Cumberland Gap; the battles of Wildcat and Fishing Creek, Kentucky; the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee; the events surrounding the arrival of the Confederate Ram "Arkansas" at Vicksburg, Mississippi, following its successful running of the Federal Fleet; a skirmish with Federal troops below Vicksburg; the battle of Fort Robinett at Corinth, Mississippi; the battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana; the battles of Baker's Creek, Champion Hill, and Jackson, Mississippi; and fighting against General Sherman in the Georgia Campaign. Gore also includes information about men in his company and their experiences in wartime living. There are references to the commanders under whom the 15th fought, namely General Zollicoffer, General E.G. Walthall, General Brantly, General Tilghman, General Pemberton, General A.S. Johnston, General Joseph E. Johnston, and General P.G.T. Beauregard.

The second page letter written in the 1890's by Gore, apparently in response to a previous letter, contains a list of company commanders of the 15th infantry and their hometowns.
