Gore Civil War History Collection

 Collection
Identifier: M20

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of an unsigned, undated 87 page history of Company D of the 15th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army, and the second page of a letter from the 1890's, listing the company commanders of the 15th Mississippi Infantry. The history is written in two distinct handwritings, neither of which seems to match the handwriting of Thomas Gore in the letter from the 1890's.

The history describes the organization and activities of Company D, the 15th Mississippi Infantry, from 1861 through their part in the Georgia Campaign in 1864. A narrator, who refers to himself as "the writer," presumably Gore, elaborates on the events and battles in which the 15th participated: the passage through the Cumberland Gap; the battles of Wildcat and Fishing Creek, Kentucky; the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee; the events surrounding the arrival of the Confederate Ram "Arkansas" at Vicksburg, Mississippi, following its successful running of the Federal Fleet; a skirmish with Federal troops below Vicksburg; the battle of Fort Robinett at Corinth, Mississippi; the battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana; the battles of Baker's Creek, Champion Hill, and Jackson, Mississippi; and fighting against General Sherman in the Georgia Campaign. Gore also includes information about men in his company and their experiences in wartime living. There are references to the commanders under whom the 15th fought, namely General Zollicoffer, General E.G. Walthall, General Brantly, General Tilghman, General Pemberton, General A.S. Johnston, General Joseph E. Johnston, and General P.G.T. Beauregard.

The second page letter written in the 1890's by Gore, apparently in response to a previous letter, contains a list of company commanders of the 15th infantry and their hometowns.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Madision Gore was born on March 5, 1836, in Pickens County, Alabama. He was the oldest of 12 children, the son of a Methodist Episcopal Minister, Ezekial Fletcher Gore and his wife, Mary Green Gore. The Gores moved from Pickens County, Alabama, to Choctaw County, Mississippi, between 1850 and 1860.

At the age of 24, on July 13, 1861, Thomas Gore enlisted as a private in the "Wigfall Rifles," soon to become Company D of the 15th Mississippi Infantry. Gore's company saw action in various battles throughout Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Georgia. He was promoted to first corporal on February 15, 1863, at Jackson, Mississippi. In December of 1864, Gore was taken prisoner at Nashville, Tennessee, and sent to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky, around January 1, 1865. He was then transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio, on January 2, 1865, and on June 13, 1865, he took the Oath of Allegiance.

Returning to his home after the war, Thomas Gore was elected Chancery Clerk of Sumner County (renamed Webster County in 1882), Mississippi, and in 1877, the Gore family moved to Walthall, Mississippi, where he was able to further his political career by serving in that office from 1878 to 1886. Thomas M. Gore helped establish Walthall Methodist Episcopal Church and was a trustee when W.F. Bays deeded the land to the church. He also practiced law and had a successful law firm with J.M. Leverett in Walthall, Mississippi.

Thomas M. Gore was married to Caroline Elizabeth Wingo; they had four children; Mary, Thomas Pryor (T.P.), Ellis, and Dick. Thomas M. Gore died on October 25, 1905, and was buried in Corsicanna, Texas.
