Scope and Contents
This document, written on March 8, 1864, at Columbus, Mississippi, reports the proceedings of a Board of Survey convened in front of the Confederate Army headquarters in Columbus. The purpose of the board was to assess the value of the horses belonging to the Brigadier General and his staff. Board members were Captain John P. Hampton, Captain Thomas E. Young, and First Lieutenant T. R. Evans, all of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry.
According to this document, the board valued the horse "Cane Brake," which belonged to Brigadier General Daniel Ruggles, at $1800. L.D. Sandidge, Adjutant General, signed the report. Also included is a copy of Special Order No. 22 which ordered the convening of the Board of Survey.

Biographical / Historical
Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897) was born at Barre, Massachusetts, and was an 1833 graduate of West Point. He served in the Seminole War and the Mexican War where he won two brevets. Having married into a Virginia family, he resigned from the United States Army on May 7, 1861, and was brigadier general of the Virginia state forces in the summer of 1861. Ruggles was commissioned brigadier general in the Confederate Army on August 9, 1861. At Shiloh he commanded the 1st Division of Bragg's Corps and aided in the assault which caused the surrender of Prentiss' Division. From 1862 through 1864, Ruggles had district and departmental commands at various points under Van Dorn, J.E. Johnston, and Leonidas Polk and was finally assigned to duty as commissary general of prisoners on March 30, 1865.
