Raymond Shonholtz Freedom Summer Memoir
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a three-page memoir of Mr. Shonholtz's experiences as a Mississippi Freedom Summer volunteer. Written in 2002, the memoir involves events that took place during the historic summer of 1964.
Mr. Shonholtz's memoir begins with an account of his experiences as an American Field Services bus chaperon in the early part of the summer of 1964, following his sophomore year at UCLA. He discusses later purchasing a car in New York and traveling to Clarksdale, Mississippi to visit Lewis Sitzer, a Freedom Summer volunteer, friend, and fellow UCLA student.
He describes his arrest for participating in Freedom Summer activities and how he came to know Dr. Aaron Henry, a Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party representative. In the memoir, Mr. Shonholtz details how he drove Dr. Henry out of Clarksdale to catch a plane bound for the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City.

Biographical / Historical
Raymond Shonholtz was a 1964 Freedom Summer volunteer stationed in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Mr. Shonholtz received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles and his J.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976, Mr. Shonholtz founded the Community Boards Program, designed to educate and empower individuals to successfully resolve conflict in their own communities and neighborhoods. He served as Director until 1988. In 1989, he founded Partners for Democratic Change, an international community of individuals and organizations committed to change and conflict management. He continues to serve as President and resides in San Francisco, California.
