Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs, correspondence, and other materials relating to Dr. Clements' service in the U. S. Army during World War II. Of particular interest is a copy of Clements' handwritten history of the U.S. Army 254th Battalion during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. There is also a series of newsletters of the 107th Engineer Association entitled, "The Bull Sheet." In addition, the collection includes a spiral-bound booklet titled, "War Experiences from the Hearts of American Heroes," prepared by Hub City Memorial Chapter 690, Military Order of the Purple Heart. The booklet contains memoirs written by veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Joseph H. Clements was born on March 3, 1920 in Owensboro, Kentucky. In the fall of 1941, while a student at the University of Kentucky, he was drafted into the U. S. Army. In 1944 he was a corporal with the 254th Engineer Combat Battalion, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe, as well as the Battle of the Bulge. He received several medals, including the Purple Heart, and his unit was awarded a presidential unit citation and France's croix de guerre.

Clements returned to school after the war, and completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Kentucky. He then earned a master's of business administration at the University of Mississippi, and a doctorate in education at the University of Oklahoma. He taught at several universities before accepting a position at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1963, where he taught business and finance administration until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure at USM, Dr. Clements received the Outstanding Professor Award.

Through the years, Dr. Clements has been active in the Hattiesburg Lions Club, the Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Association, the American Diabetic Association, and in the Episcopalian church. He married Mary M. Malios in 1960, and they are the parents of one son, Joseph Christopher.
