Biographical / Historical
Anita Prados attended Mississippi Normal College from 1914 to 1915 after graduating from Gulfport High School. She received her five years’ teacher’s certificate while there, a certificate that could become permanent if the holder taught for five years.
Mississippi Normal College, founded in 1910 as the state’s first state-supported teachers’ training school, hosted about four hundred students in 1915. The campus had only a few buildings, including two women’s dorms (Ms. Prados stayed in Hattiesburg Hall), one men’s dorm, and a building, now College Hall, which held administrative offices, an auditorium, and classrooms. A streetcar line ran from the entrance of the College to Hattiesburg, connecting the isolated campus to the town.
