Scope and Contents

The collection contains various receipts, deeds, and correspondence of the Flinn-Pegram families, ranging from 1830 to 1903. Some items are accompanied by a typed transcription.

There are also a few samples of 19th century advertising within the collection, including two copies of “Dr. Clark’s Pocket Memorandum Book,” advertising pharmaceutical remedies for medical ailments, and an Arm & Hammer brand booklet that contains a series of stereotyped depictions of African Americans from the time period.

Biographical / Historical

Claude E. Fike, son of Claude Edwin and Rosa Pegram Fike, was born in Delmar, Maryland, on March 31, 1920, and grew up in North Carolina. He served in the Navy during World War II before pursuing an academic career; he received his PhD in History from the University of Illinois in 1950 and followed a teaching career. Dr. Fike joined the University of Southern Mississippi faculty as a professor in 1957 and served as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1961 to 1976. He was then appointed director of the McCain Library and Archives, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. Dr. Fike died on August 4, 1994, of cancer. He is interred in Roseland Park Cemetery, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

A descendant of both the Flinn and Pegram families, the items in this collection belonged to Dr. Fike’s ancestors, and the Flinns were his grandparents.
