Biographical / Historical
This collection contains three copies of The Trojan Journal, a newsletter produced aboard the U.S.S. Troy. The ship was commissioned by the United States Navy in February 1919 as troop transport from the European theatre of World War I. She successfully brought home more than 14,000 troops before being decommissioned in September of that year. The newsletters cover the dates of August 13, 14, and 15, 1919, and chronicle notable daily events (including stowaways and fires), the distance in miles the vessel travelled that day, and the distance in miles from the departure port of Brest and the arrival port of New York.
This collection also contains information on Camp Merritt in Cresskill, New Jersey. This military base was activated for use during World War I. Thousands of troops deployed to Camp Merritt before being shipped off to Europe. Camp Merritt was decommissioned in 1919.
