Biographical / Historical

Guy L. Gammon was born on April 20, 1916 in Thebes, Illinois and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. Gammon was a Sergeant stationed at the Crash Boat Base in Ocean Springs, Mississippi during the Second World War. The Crash Boat Base was created in 1944 to act as an emergency rescue base to aid airmen forced into the water during training. The base would also become a training center for bombers such as B-24 Liberators and B-17 Flying Fortresses and near the end of the war B-29 Super Fortress crews trained there. Operations on the base would discontinue in 1946.
