Biographical / Historical
John Edmond Gonzales was born on September 17, 1924 in New Orleans. He was the son of Joseph Edmond and Sadie Julia (Albritton) Gonzales. He received a Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University in 1943, a Master of Arts from Louisiana State University in 1945, and a Doctor of Philosophy from The University North Carolina in 1957.
Dr. Gonzales was a faculty member in the History Department at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1945-1995; William D. McCain professor of history from 1968-1995; Distinguished University professor, 1973-1995; professor emeritus from 1995-1999.
He was a founding member of the USM History department and the auditorium in the Liberal Arts Building is named for him. In 2001, he donated his life savings to establish several scholarships to honor outstanding History students at Southern Miss.
