Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of playbills, photographs, scrapbooks, posters, correspondence, bylaws, budgets, and memorabilia of the Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera. It also includes newspaper clippings and production notes for some HCLO shows. This collection should be of interest to researchers of local theatrical organizations, or those interested in forming such groups.

This collection consists of one video of what appears to be the Freedom Day protests of January 22, 1964 that occurred for voter registration outside of the courthouse in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Hattiesburg Civil Rights Film is of particular interest to researchers studying the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi, and Hattiesburg.

Abstract

The bulk of the collection consists of 70 logging railroad maps drawn by Tony Howe. The maps portray railroad operations, timber holdings and other aspects of lumber companies that proliferated in South Mississippi during the latter years of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

This collection consists of a scrapbook with original photographs, newspaper clippings, artifacts, minutes of meetings (1948-1955), correspondence from commercial jewelers regarding membership pins, and copies of the club’s constitution. Additionally, a preservation photocopy of the scrapbook has been made on acid-free paper and placed in the collection.

An unsigned, one-page letter to U.S. Attorney General Robert F. “Bob” Kennedy from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It appears that a local white woman wrote the letter. The letter describes the Freedom Riders and other civil rights activists negatively and criticizes the federal government for interfering in the Southern way of life.
