These materials on Richmond Barthé were brought together in 1979 and 1980, and 1998 and 1999 as a special collection for research purposes of Associate Professor Harry C. Ward of the University of Southern Mississippi Art Department. These items describe the personal and professional life of Richmond Barthé.

Abstract

The Robber Bridegroom Poster Collection consists of a poster from Lemuria Bookstore commemorating an illustrated, forty-fifth anniversary edition of Eudora Welty’s novella, The Robber Bridegroom (1942), which is signed by the illustrator Barry Moser. This collection is of particular interest to researchers studying American literature, Mississippi authors, Eudora Welty, and Barry Moser.

Abstract

The Henry and Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner Civil Rights Movement Collection contains a vast array of materials from during and after the [Lorenzi] Sojourner’s time in Holmes County, Mississippi, during the Freedom Summer of 1964. This collection would be of interest to researchers studying the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi history, and Freedom Summer.

Materials cover the feminist movement, a farm co-op, and Sue’s artistic endeavors.

Form of Material Sixteen folders of USM-related drawings by Hattiesburg artist, Sharon Vanek, and four folders of newspaper clippings showcasing some of Ms. Vanek’s work. Included are sketches of USM benefactors who have contributed one million dollars, or more, to Southern Miss. The sketches led to pen and ink portraits of the benefactors.
