Scope and Contents This collection consists of a Forrest County, Mississippi, record book that lists people charged with offenses ranging from "allowing minors to enter and remain in pool room" to murder. The record book was kept between 1912 and 1939, but very few entries include specific dates. Instead, the entries are arranged by circuit court terms, such as "April Term 1916" or "November Term 1939." Most of the entries include a two to four digit number that may be a warrant number, or perhaps a docket...

The bulk of the collection consists of 70 logging railroad maps drawn by Tony Howe. The maps portray railroad operations, timber holdings and other aspects of lumber companies that proliferated in South Mississippi during the latter years of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

An unsigned, one-page letter to U.S. Attorney General Robert F. “Bob” Kennedy from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It appears that a local white woman wrote the letter. The letter describes the Freedom Riders and other civil rights activists negatively and criticizes the federal government for interfering in the Southern way of life.

The Jim McLain Forrest County Papers consist of letters, postcards, and a diary written by members of the Thompson-Byrd Family from 1900-1915. John and Mahala Byrd Thompson lived in Perry County and later at McCallum in Forrest County. The collection is of particular interest to researchers studying Mississippi families and genealogy.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of thirteen volumes of journals and ledgers documenting the financial condition, accounts and related activities of the J. J. Newman Lumber Company which operated in Hattiesburg, Mississippi between approximately 1894 and 1943. It is not a complete set of the company's books, but some information is available for almost every year of the company's existence. The largest gaps for which no information is available are 1899-1902 and 1907-1908.

Among other things, images showcase the logging industry, family and church gatherings, and games. This collection is of particular interest to researchers studying the logging industry, life and culture in the early twentieth century, Mississippi history, the University of Southern Mississippi, farming, and railroads.

Scope and Contents This collection largely consists of the 1959-1963 correspondence of Fred D. Montague and Forrest County Republican Party Chairman, Clarence E. Tolar. Most of the correspondence was received from the Mississippi Republican Party headquarters, and much of this was signed by the state chairman, Wirt A.
