The David C. Berry, Jr. Papers include the correspondence, drafted writings, and publications of USM professor and poet David C. Berry. This collection would be of particular interest to researchers focusing on the writing process or studying university professorships and family life in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Topics in Berry’s poetry include the Vietnam War, marriage, divorce, and religion.

The Alma Hickman Papers are a fascinating group of materials that document the life and career of one of the University of Southern Mississippi’s first faculty members. The collection provides information on the educational system in Mississippi during the years Hickman taught, as well as information on the early days of the university. It also documents the many awards and honors Hickman received throughout her career, and includes some of her personal items such as her Bible.

Bo Morgan holds a Ph.D. in history from Memphis State University. He studies the history of the American South and is a leading expert on Mississippi history. He teaches courses on the South after Reconstruction, Mississippi, the theory and philosophy of history, and intellectual history. Dr. Morgan, the former chair of the Department of History at Delta State University, joined USM's Department of History in the fall of 2009.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of a bound copy of the typescript for Southern Negroes, 1861-1865 by Bell I. Wiley. Although the book was published in 1938, the work was originally written as a dissertation during Wiley's studies at Yale University in the early 1930s. The copy in the collection was presented to the University of Southern Mississippi by Miss Anna Roberts on July 11, 1962, and is probably a carbon copy of the original dissertation.
